Red necked bird. In breeding plumage the neck is a rich brick red. Members of Ardeidae fly with their necks retracted unlike other long-necked birds such as storks ibises and spoonbills. Herons and egrets are medium to large wading birds with long necks and legs.

Females are brighter than males. They are often found with whales and will pick parasites from their backs. They will defend their territories with underwater attack-dives.

Bitterns tend to be shorter necked and more secretive. Finches are brown streaky sparrow-like birds more likely in your trees than on the ground. Red Phalaropes are usually in smaller flocks than Red-necked Phalaropes but are sometimes in mixed flocks with them.

Feeds on algae and aquatic plants insects and insect larvae. Red-necked Grebes are boldly plumaged waterbirds with pale cheeks and a daggerlike yellow bill that contrasts with a sharp black crown often likened to a toreadors cap sometimes raised into a short crest. The red-necked phalaropes arrive back at their breeding grounds in May.

Best looked for on passage in August and September. In the breeding season Red-necked Grebes are highly territorial against other species of water birds. Upper breast is rust-brown and spotted.

It is migratory and unusually for a wader winters at sea on tropical oceans. On their Arctic breeding grounds these birds are blue-gray with a reddish wash on the neck. Females start to leave in June with males and young departing in July and August.

Phalaropus lobatus Phalaropes reverse the usual sex roles in birds. So in a flock of red finches only a few of the birds will show a red head. Females are larger and more colorful than males.
